FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT ARE EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

Eyelash extensions are single synthetic/man-made lashes applied directly to the natural lash, close to (but not touching) the lash line with a semi-permanent bonding adhesive. A single extension, or up to 2-15 super fine extensions (depending on lash set) are applied to a single isolated lash, leaving the eyelashes and eyelids to move freely. They are applied carefully, one by one using specially designed tweezers. The whole process normally takes 1 – 2 hours depending on how many lashes are applied and the set type.

ARE EYELASH EXTENSIONS SAFE?

Eyelash Extensions are completely safe when applied correctly. With proper application, every natural lash is carefully isolated. This ensures there is no irritation or discomfort as your natural lashes grow out.

Russian volume lashes are customised to every lash to ensure the overall health of your natural lashes. ilaSH BeautyBar use ONLY hand made fans, making each fan as you go, to ensure all lash weights suit the strength of the natural lash.

Proper aftercare is also important in keeping your eyelash extensions and natural lashes healthy.

Please listen to your lash stylist's advice about how long/heavy you should go, especially if you have naturally thin/sparse lashes. This advice will ensure the safety and health of your natural lashes.

Sometimes clients choose not to take our advice regarding the lashes and do request extra long and thick lashes be applied to their natural lashes. I strongly advise against this, as I can not guarantee that they will last well if they are too long and heavy for your natural lash to support.

At ilaSH BeautyBar, we will apply the lashes that you request within reason and always advise you of any issues. However, please be reminded that this is your choice and once you leave the salon, you must follow all aftercare given and look after your lashes as best as possible.

WHO CAN GET EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

Whether you are female or male, almost anyone from the age of 16 can have eyelash extensions!

Parental permission/accompaniment is required if you are 16 and under.

WHO CANNOT HAVE EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

If you have an eye infection, irritation, have had an allergic reaction to eyelash extensions in the past or have highly sensitive eyes, eyelash extensions are not recommended or will not be applied unless a patch test is performed prior due to health and safety risks.

If you suffer from hayfever, seasonal allergies or eczema or irritation,  sensitivity can occur, however, it is still safe for lash extensions to be applied as long as you are aware of risks involved.

Treatment ointments for eczema can also cause your eyelash extensions to fall out prematurely as the oils from the creams can cause the glue to break down and unattach prematurely from the natural lash.

If you suffer from temporary hay fever and find your symptoms are playing up on the day of your appointment, please reschedule your appointment to avoid further irritation. Please be aware that any rubbing or scratching of your eyes can lead to the pulling out of your lash extensions along with your natural lashes. To avoid potential irritation it is best to wait until your symptoms have cleared up.

DO EYELASH EXTENSIONS HURT?

No. I am often asked ‘do eyelash extensions hurt?’ and the answer is not at all – if applied properly! Eyelash extensions are applied directly to the eyelash itself, so there is zero contact with the skin. The lash appointment may feel a little unusual the first time, but once you get used to the process you should be so comfortable that you even want to nap! ilaSH BeautyBar uses high-quality, low-fume glue, which (unlike cheaper products) does not burn or sting. People with extremely sensitive eyes or sinus problems may get some watering and slight discomfort at the end, but this normally subsides within seconds. Please alert your lash stylist if you are experiencing any stinging during the treatment – some individuals with very dry eyes/eyes that don’t close properly may do, and I will adjust the procedure to keep you comfortable.

WHAT DO EYELASH EXTENSIONS FEEL LIKE? ARE THEY HEAVY?

Eyelash extensions should not feel heavy at all! If it is your first time wearing lash extensions, you may be slightly aware of them to start off with but in no time you'll forget that you are wearing any at all! Even thick Russian Volume sets feel light and fluffy. Those who love the look of falsies but hate the heaviness when wearing them, Russian Volume extensions are for you!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLASSIC AND RUSSIAN VOLUME?

A CLASSIC set involves placing one eyelash extension onto one natural lash (1:1)

A RUSSIAN VOLUME set involves placing two or more extensions onto one natural lash.

E.G.

2D Russian Volume (Light): 2 lash extensions on 1 natural lash (2:1)

3D Russian Volume (Medium): 3 extensions on 1 lash (3:1)

4D Russian Volume (Full): 4 extensions on 1 lash (4:1)

You may ask, but won't 3 lash extensions on 1 natural lash damage my lashes?

The answer is no.

As well as different lengths, there are also different lash thicknesses available, therefore finer and lighter lashes are used to achieve a higher volume dimension.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH SET OF LASHES TO CHOOSE?

On the home page, follow the link to 'Eyelash Extensions' for a description on the different sets available.
If it is your first time getting lash extensions I would recommend either Classic or Light Russian Volume as these sets are the most natural and a great way to ease yourself into lash extensions.
If you are still unsure of which set to choose, please contact ilaSH BeautyBar through Facebook or Instagram.

WHAT IS THE 'WISPY LASH' STYLE?

The wispy lash style is a mixture of various lenghts throughout your lash set. These can be different curls and thicknesses creating more texture throughout.

This style is popular among those who are used to the textured 'strip lash' look and are suitable for almost everyone.

The longest length available is a 14mm lash, as I believe anything longer than this length is not suited to most natural lashes.

Please note that because of this, if you have naturally very long lashes, the wispy style may not be as textured as someone with shorter lashes.

The 'Wispy' style is an added $10 to any full set and $5 per infill, as extra time and styling is required to achieve the best results.

HOW LONG WILL THE APPOINTMENT TAKE?

Each set ranges from 60-90 minutes.

However, the time will differ from set to set.

Other factors such as watering eyes, bathroom breaks, etc. can run into your appointment time, potentially adding an extra 5-10 minutes onto your allocated time slot.

To be safe, I would recommend adding half an hour to any application to cater for arrival time and departure time (how long it takes to get to and from work/home) and allowing sufficient time for unexpected extras.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT?

The main thing is to have clean eyes and eyelashes, free of makeup – especially mascara. Some mascaras contain oils that can prevent eyelash extensions bonding correctly. Be sure to use an oil-free makeup remover if removing makeup, and try to avoid using any oil or petroleum based products on or around the eye area for 48 hours prior (such as Vaseline or moisturizers). Do not have your eyelashes lifted– it is very difficult for us to apply extensions on lashes which have been lifted within the last 2-3 weeks, as often the extensions will not bond correctly. If you have had a more gentle lash lift which has dropped, that should be ok.

HOW LONG DO EYELASH EXTENSIONS LAST?

Eyelash Extensions in general can last up to 6 weeks, though by this time they will most definitely not resemble a full set and will look quite gappy and sparse. Realistically your lashes will look the best up to 4 weeks, after this time your set will continue to thin out and a new set will be required.
Many factors can play a part in how often your lashes will last (individual lash cycles, afercare, avoiding oily products on your face to name a few)
Infills are required every 2-3 weeks to keep your lashes looking full and fresh.
If it is your first ever set of lash extensions, I do recommend booking your infill at 2 weeks to start, just to get a rough idea of how your lashes are holding up.

MY OWN EYELASHES ARE FALLING OUT WITH THE EXTENSIONS. IS THIS NORMAL?

Yes, this is completely normal.

Some people don’t actually realise this, but every day, we lose anywhere from 1-5 natural lashes – much like the hairs on our head, they replace themselves as new ones grow! Usually twice a year (change of seasons, particularly end of Summer and beginning of Spring you will notice that you lose more natural lashes than normal – this is called seasonal shedding, and you will normally find that your lashes seem to be falling out more quickly than normal – and that a lot of new baby lashes have come through at your next appointment. Don’t be too concerned – it happens to everyone a couple of times a year, and if you are worried, get in touch or talk to your lash stylist who can assess the health of your lashes at any point.

Be aware that your lash extension shedding will be more noticeable as opposed to your natural lashes as your natural lashes are so fine you most likely would not notice when they shed.

If you have had volume lashes applied and you notice that one single lash has shed from the fan, do not be alarmed. This could be from the fan attaching to the natural lash but one lash has not wrapped/hugged the natural lash correctly and has simply fallen off.

If this becomes noticeable throughout your set, please contact ilaSH BeautyBar to have a look at your lashes and assess what can be done to correct this.

CAN I GET LASH EXTENSIONS AFTER A LASH LIFT?

It’s best that you wait 2-3 weeks so that the lashes are smooth enough to allow for correct bonding. On very lifted/kinked lashes, it can be difficult to get them to bond well/last properly.
If your lash lift is a very gentle curl or has dropped significantly, then it should be fine to proceed.

WHAT IS A LASH CYCLE?

You might be surprised to learn that everyone’s lashes have a life cycle and shed, just like the hair on your head! Once a natural lash’s life cycle is complete, the lash falls out naturally, taking the extension with it. Everyone’s lash cycle is a little different, but on average you should be experiencing a turnover of your natural lashes every six weeks or so.

TECHNICAL TERMS:

Anagen (Growth) Phase:

The anagen phase is also called the growth phase. This is the phase when lashes are actively growing, and it lasts between 30 and 45 days. Only about 40 percent of the upper lashes and 15 percent of the lower lashes are in the anagen phase at any one time. Each lash will grow to a specific length and then stop.

Catagen (Transition) Phase:

The catagen phase is also known as the transition phase. During this phase, the lash stops growing and the hair follicle shrinks. If an eyelash falls out or is plucked out during this phase, it won’t grow back right away because the follicle needs to complete the catagen phase before it can move on to the next one. This phase lasts between two and three weeks.

Telogen (Resting) Phase:

The telogen phase is also referred to as the resting phase. This phase can last more than 100 days before the eyelash falls out and a new one begins to grow. Because each individual lash is in its own phase of the growing cycle, it’s normal for a few lashes to fall out most days. It typically takes between four and eight weeks to fully replace an eyelash.

I HAD A FRIEND WHOSE LASHES WERE DAMAGED BY LASH EXTENSIONS. HOW CAN YOU GUARANTEE THIS WONT HAPPEN TO ME?

Beware booking an appointment at a non-specialist salon! Inexperienced technicians or those who rush can use lashes that are too heavy/clumped together (often called ‘Express Volume”) – this incorrect technique usually results in damaged lashes. Our aim at ilaSH BeautyBar is to give you beautiful lashes all the time, with no damage to your natural lashes. We customize your lash extensions so they are the correct weight and thickness for you, and apply them carefully – one by one – so your natural lashes will remain as healthy as ever!
ilaSH BeautyBar use only HANDMADE fans, which means we make the fans as you go, to ensure each fan has been customised using weight and length to suit each individual lash.

WHY DO I NEED INFILLS?

Infills are required to keep your lash set full and lush. Not only can your lash extensions grow out, they can also shed out, be pulled out and rubbed out. You can shed between 3-5 natural lashes a day meaning over the span of 2-4 weeks you can lose quite a few eyelash extensions therefore infills are required to fill in any missing gaps.

I'M PREGNANT. CAN I STILL GET LASH EXTENSIONS?

Generally speaking, eyelash extensions are a safe and non-invasive cosmetic procedure. ilaSH BeautyBar uses a high-quality, low-fume adhesive that is manufactured specifically for cosmetic use near the eye, and the adhesive is applied to your lash hairs rather than your skin. Allergic reactions to the adhesive are very rare and can be easily treated if they manifest. In saying this, if you are pregnant and have never had eyelash extensions before, I strongly recommend a patch test before your treatment. This patch test must be completed at least 48 hours prior to the booking.
Why do we need to patch test before proceeding? Firstly, the lash extension procedure requires you to lay flat on your back for over one hour; a position that is not recommended for women in the advanced stages of pregnancy. It also requires that you lie quite still – which can be hard if you’re heavily pregnant! The patch test gives you a chance to see what it’s like lying in that position for a short time, so that you can gauge how well your body will respond to a prolonged appointment. Secondly, if you are unlucky enough to have an allergic reaction your doctor may not be able to give you the required treatment due to your pregnancy. So
I highly recommend a patch test first before proceeding.
Please note: if we have been doing your lashes here at ilaSH BeautyBar and you become pregnant, there’s no problem continuing with the extensions – just let me know so that I can make sure you are comfortable at all times! You’d already be familiar with all of the products and glue, so reactions are far less likely to occur.

I HAVE HAD MY LASHES APPLIED ELSEWHERE. WILL YOU INFILL THEM?

The short answer is no.

Unfortunately I am not comfortable infilling another artists work. The reason for this is simply because I am unaware of what products have been used, what lashes have been applied and also because I cannot guarantee the quality and cleanliness of the work.

CAN I GET MY LASH EXTENSIONS WET?

For the first 24 hours after application you must not get your lashes wet...But...After those 24 hours are up you can go abot your regular activities as usual which can include swimming, showering, going to the gym etc.

CAN I STILL WEAR MAKEUP WHEN I HAVE LASH EXTENSIONS APPLIED?

Yes, you can – as long as it oil-free and very low in glycol/glycerin. These ingredients attack the glue, loosening the lash bond and causing extensions to fall. I’d recommend:

Liquid/pen liner (oil-free, of course) – gel liner tends to stick in the roots of the lashes and is tough to remove.

Powder-type eyeshadows are fine – check the ingredients list of liquid/stick eyeshadow for glycol and glycerin, as sometimes these products are snuck in!

To avoid using mascara if possible – this product causes the extensions to clump together, and often contains oils to weaken the glue bond on your lashes. Especially waterproof mascara!

PLEASE DO NOT use mascara on volume lashes – regardless of which brand you use, mascara makes volume fans snap shut. This means your lashes will look clumpy and stick together. I will not be able to infill volume lashes that have had mascara applied to them.

CAN I BRING MY CHILD OR A GUEST?

You are welcome to bring your child or guest but there are a few little conditions.

Guests must be kept to a maximum of 2. As your appointment can take a bit of time please make sure your guests are aware of this.

Children are welcome from the ages of 3 and up. Mums know their children best, so if you don't think your child would be able to play/entertain them self for a period of up to 60-90 minutes, please organise for a guest to accompany you to watch them throughout your appointment. Please note: If your child needs attending to frequently there is a higher risk of eye irritation due to constant eye-opening, as well as this time will cut into your available lash time.
